The phone and the breath are mutually exclusive

We breathe differently when we look at a screen. It is a shallow, upper-chest breath, born of anticipation. When we put the phone down, our breathing descends into the belly. We inhabit our full volume.

In the first 48 hours of a digital detox, guests often experience a mix of anxiety and relief. The brain is detoxing from the constant dopamine micro-doses of likes and retweets. But as the hours pass, attention spans widen. Guests begin to read books again, to talk without interruption, and to look at the horizon.

Your breath is the bridge to the present. The phone is a bridge to everywhere else. To be present, we must occasionally cross back over.
