One place for the whole week.
Yoga & Self is residential, and that is most of the point. You practise, eat, rest and sleep in the same place, which is what lets a retreat build on itself instead of restarting every morning.
The property sits in Anjuna, in North Goa. Mornings happen in the shala, late mornings usually in the library, afternoons wherever you want them, and evenings back in the shala for restorative practice, sound or music before dinner.
Three rooms, and a garden between them.
The shala
An open-sided pavilion under a thatched roof, carried on painted steel trusses, with a red-oxide floor and split-bamboo blinds on every side. The blinds come down when the sun is high and roll up when it isn't. Mats, bolsters, blocks and straps are laid out before each session. No mirrors.
The library
A long room with a bamboo ceiling, low floor seating, leather and canvas cushions, patterned rugs and shelves of books. It is where people end up between sessions — reading, journaling, talking quietly, or doing nothing in particular. The house rules are on a chalkboard at one end.
The garden
The approach runs up through banana palms and dense planting to the entrance. Between practices there is shade, greenery and somewhere to sit — which, over a few days, turns out to matter more than most facilities.
